The Surface Breaks by Louise O’Neill

HAPPY PUBLICATION DAY LOUISE! The Surface Breaks is on all good book store shelves today! The literary gods have blessed us with not just one Louise O’Neill book this year, but two.

The Surface Breaks is a retelling of the classic fairy tale The Little Mermaid. Set in the cold Irish sea it follows a little mermaid who is always looking toward the surface for something more. Forced to be married to a man she doesn’t love come her sixteenth birthday, Gaia must choose, will she stay in the sea kingdom, trapped forever by her controlling father and the consuming thoughts of never knowing what happened to her mother. Or will she sacrifice everything she knows for a life and a boy she knows nothing about.

We all know the classic Disney story of The Little Mermaid, this book is not that. If you have read the original Hans Christian Andersen tale this will cut close to home, expect with a strong feminist voice and a message that many woman still face to this day, The Surface Breaks cuts deep into the longing of freedom, independence and what true love is.

I loved this book! I read it a few short hours because I devoured it. I urge you to read it and become part of Gaia’s world.

Sadly no singing crabs.

Happy reading!
